I have it on good authority that as this little band of merry folk were charging up the one and only street on Markington village, they popped their head into the local pub and said "don't close up .... We are just going to do some sandbagging and we will be back for a pint!"
Now if you are inclined toward omens or predictions that something is about to happen ... then, I think all indicators were there the day prior (forget about the practical science of the weather bureau - I like my version better).
Tez and I had popped into town (village of Ripon) as I had a hairdressing appointment, naturally. It was Christmas eve and of course, I wanted to ensure my curls were straightened. We had made arrangements that he would return to the salon in 45 minutes to meet up with me and we would do our last minute Christmas chores and messages. While I was being shampooed the skies opened up. Heavy, heavy, heavy and I mean heavy, rain began to fall. My blow dry was finished 10 minutes earlier that predicted. 'Good opportunity to nick into the next store and purchase an umbrella,' I thought to myself.
Of course ... You have guessed it ... Tez happened to return to the salon in that 4 minute timeslot that I was in next door. "She has left", the receptionist advised him. I can only assume it was my Aussie accent when I said "I am going in next door to buy an umbrella. If my husband comes ask him to wait" sounded like I said to her ... "Bye, Happy Christmas" and hence the confusion occurred.
Waiting, waiting, waiting and it is bucketing down. About 25 minutes later the receptionist advises me that Tez had been and gone! Hence my dilemma. I have no idea where he is (we do not have network in UK - data roaming turned off.) His phone is in my bag, anyway. Our plan was to rendezvous at the salon. It is still pouring with rain 1 1/2 hours later. I don't have the car keys, Tez does! So what to do? I am now frustrated, cold and know the hair do is going to get wet !!! Only solution was to grab a taxi and go back to Markington. As I am running through the rain and the wind is blowing my brolly inside out, I go via the car park as a short cut.
Imagine my surprise?! .... Here is Tez, in the car, snug as a bug and singing Christmas carols.
To say I was a bit antsy when I jumped in beside him – may be a gross understatement, perhaps ..... It wasn't really a good old fashioned blue, as such. It was a hyper active scorpio DC rant, all the while with me trying to dry my hair ... That much rain had to be an omen !!
Fortunately, it had not been raining a few days earlier when Tez had the privilege to join a pheasant shoot at Markington, with approximately 20 other chaps! I had a great time in the kitchen with Jules helping her with the catering. Pheasant shoots .... Now that is another story.
Sad footnote to this frivolous tale is that there have indeed been terrible floods across the north of England and Scotland while we were here. At the same time as we were amid this weather, we were watching what was happening back home along the great ocean road with bushfires and extreme heat.
How did you fare with weather over your Christmas break?
